The State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG) was founded in 1985 and was opened to the public in September of the same year. In 1989, LASG was promoted to a State Key Laboratory. LASG was rated a “Top-ranking State Key Laboratory” in seven consecutive national assessments of 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015.Only two State Key Laboratories in the field of geoscience received the same honor. With its more than 30 years’ of development, LASG has become an influential research institution of atmospheric sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics for both nationally and internationally. The priority research areas of LASG are: (I) earth system model development and application, (II) weather and climate dynamics, mechanisms of climate changes and anomalies (III) the predictability of weather and climate, advanced theories and methods of climate prediction and (IV) macro evolution and mechanism of geophysical fluid.
LASG is committed to developing high level of earth system model, revealing the intrinsic dynamics, thermal mechanisms and external influencing factors of global and East Asia climate change from the perspective of the interaction of the earth system sphere, and to carrying out original and frontier research on climate and climate change for both basic and applied science by using extreme events predictability and prediction methods, and to providing the theoretical basis for climate prediction and climate change of China.
